About Dr. Pearson
In November 2006, Dr. Mario Pearson was appointed director of music and liturgy for the Cathedral. His primary duties are to serve as principal organist, plan, organize and recruit volunteers to serve in the Cathedral music ministry (choirs, cantors, orchestra etc.). He also oversees liturgical ministry training, formation and scheduling. Additionally he manages a music arts and concert series that welcomes local professional program artists such as Friends of chamber music (presenting renowned artists like the Tallis Scholars). Local choirs performing regularly are Te Deum, William Baker singers, Kantorei summer institute, a co-sponsored even with the local American Guild of Organists (AGO) French Organ Music Festival to name but a few. Special events are also scheduled throughout the year to collaborate and to connect diocesan music programs as well as music programs from the Kansas City, Kansas Archdiocese.
· St. Cecilia Music Festival
· Summer Chamber Orchestra
· Missa Choralis (guest choir program)
The Cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese, and it is EVERYONE’S church! Dr. Pearson actively invites and welcomes parish choirs from throughout the diocese to participate as guest musicians at the Cathedral’s weekend liturgies. This type of pilgrimage affirms the connection everyone has to the Bishop and the Cathedral – the Bishop as pastor of the Cathedral church.
Since the restructuring and reorganization of personnel and programs in the diocese earlier in the summer of 2015, he was asked to serve as the music coordinator of the diocese. This part time position is in addition to his full time responsibilities at the Cathedral parish. His primary responsibilities for the upcoming year will be to plan and coordinate the music for Bishop Johnston's installation on November 4, 2015, plan and coordinate the musicians for the pontifical events scheduled at the Cathedral and in the diocese. Plans are also underway for workshop/continuing education opportunities as well as to establish a music leadership and resource team in the diocese. Utilizing the great wealth of talent in our diocese, this team will serve as support for parishes who desire to develop music programs or need mentors to help them grow and develop.
